Electric tools are an investment for any homeowner or do-it-yourself’er.   The satisfaction of a hobby requiring power tools, and the money saved by taking care of repairs oneself are significant; making certain that the tools necessary are in good condition and don’t themselves need frequent repairs is important.

Keep power tools free of dust and dirt.  Air intake and exhaust vents may require special attention.  When in storage, keep tools in their original cases for the best possible protection from dust and moisture.  Also, keep cords in good condition by checking for wear and tear, loose wires, or damage to insulation.  Wipe them down after exposure to oil and grease, which can degrade some rubbers and plastics.

For tools with a cutting surface, be sure to lightly oil at appropriate times, to prevent rust.  Keep tools in a dry area, and examine for rust periodically when in storage.  And keep cutting blades in good condition.  By sharpening regularly and replacing when necessary, less stress is placed on the tool, leading to a longer life.

Choose quality tools when buying. With careful cleaning, storage, and maintenance, good performance can be expected for years to come.
